Europe's GÉANT computer initiative will link with others to create a single-global research network.

High-speed links will now be established with regional research network infrastructures emerging in the Balkans, the Black Sea and Mediterranean regions, as well Asia, southern Africa and Latin America.

"By investing a further €90 million up to 2012 in the 3rd generation GÉANT, the EU is committed to staying at the forefront of the Internet's evolution, and to making scientific collaboration seamless and straightforward," said Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for information society and media.

GÉANT was designed to stay ahead of bandwidth requirements, it uses optical transmission and hybrid networking technology to achieve fast performance.

Ms Reding explained that with its massive data processing ability "it benefits Europe's competitiveness, but is also boosting collaboration between researchers on a global scale".

At present GÉANT joins around 30 million users in more than 3,500 universities and research centres. It is used by scientists to send huge amounts of data for studies in climate change, radio astronomy and biotechnology.
