Google has launched a new website publishing tool that helps office workers build their own collaborative websites.

Google Sites replaces Google Page Creator and allows businesses to set up intranets, share pictures, calendars and project management tools.

Matt Glotzbach, product management director for Google Enterprise told CNET News the application "is the nucleus for other pieces to fit into for online collaboration".

The application is based upon JotSpot and is similar to a Wiki in that its content can be modified by various users, which makes it useful for business teams, educators and smaller group projects.

Glotzbach went on to explain the application was part of a recent development in web-based or 'cloud' computing, where 'power users' have become "'power collaborators' grabbing content from six different places in the cloud and putting on a site and sharing it".

The move will be of interest to web designers, although the user generated material is expected to complement rather than supplant professional web design.
