Recently launched website TVCatchup has been closed down by its web host, Brand Republic has reported.

The site, which acted as an online video recorder was shut down yesterday for reported "terms of service violations".

The BBC had previously said it would investigate the site. A spokesperson for the corporation told the Guardian: "We do not accept all of the assumptions and assertions that they have made in their terms of service, and will be looking into this further."

Operators of the site were hoping to recoup their investment with money from advertising – they were reported to even have approached ITV, Sky and Channel Five to sell them ad slots.

YouTube, the most popular video-sharing site agreed deals with larger media channels to help them closer control copyrighted clips.
