BeatThatQuote.co.uk was the UK's fastest growing website of 2007, according to analysts Nielsen Online.
The insurance comparison site increased its UK audience from 31,000 to 392,000 unique users, a growth of more than 1,100 per cent.
"Many will be surprised to see that Facebook was not the fastest growing site of the year," said internet analyst, Alex Burmaster. "This honour went to price comparison site Beat That Quote – a reminder that the internet provides valuable services other than virtually poking friends and acquaintances."
The study found the web is still dominated by its big-name sites. "Google Search, MSN/Windows Live Messenger and eBay were the most popular and most heavily used single web services across 2007," he noted.
Virtual world, Second Life took the title of most engaging site, keeping its average UK visitor for more than 13 hours and Yahoo! Widgets saw visitors return most often – 23 times per month.
The government is considering issuing new guidelines to clarify how long it believes children should spend online.
