Social networking site users should take more care when they add information to their favourite pages, a leading security initiative has warned.

Get Safe Online has urged web users to take care, as criminals can use their personal details. Managing director, Tony Neate said: "Social networking sites are great sites – they're fantastic, as long as you're sensible with what you do."

He explained that personal identity information is so important "the less information you can give people, the better".

Mr Neate advised site users to not reveal contact details or credit card numbers and to use nicknames when communicating with friends.

Additionally, he said visitors sometimes have left their profiles open despite having finished on the sites.

"Keep your profiles closed, and you're going to be a lot safer when you're online," he went on to advise.

The UK Payments Association (Apacs) has found online banking fraud increased by nearly 50 per cent between 2005 and 2006.
