Cyber Asbo
Web 2.0
05 December 2007
A 17-year-old has been issued a 'cyber anti-social behaviour order' (Asbo) after using a social networking site to boast about his criminal behaviour.
Police said the youth posted comments and photographs on Bebo and was given the Asbo for a number of offences, including vehicle theft and the possession of cannabis.
PC Tim Chapman said: "The comments on the Bebo website demonstrated his attitude towards offending, the community and the police."
The employment digest's Newbies' Guide to Social Networking says some sites are censored but the rules differ for each site.
"Most massive sites have content guidelines and reserve the right to pull anything they find offensive or get complaints about. Many offer private content areas where there's no content supervision," they advise.
Most sites encourage their members to report inappropriate or deliberately offensive material, and pass on details of illegal activity to the authorities.
