Internet shoppers in Japan will be able to buy from eBay when they are logged into their Yahoo! accounts.

Japanese users will then be able to bid on items listed in the US and by the middle of 2008 items from Yahoo Japan will be listed on eBay, the Associated Press reports.

Chief executive Meg Whitman said: "We are excited to partner with Yahoo Japan in providing Japanese users with localised site designed to enable them to shop on the eBay marketplace with ease and convenience."

It is the first time the two companies have worked together. They have also launched a site called 'Sekaimon', or 'gateway to the world', to help translate auction listings.

A recent investigation by the Sunday Times found that criminals had been using eBay to steal users' credentials and then appear as reputable sellers.

Garreth Griffith, head of trust & safety in the UK and Ireland, said: "In any trading environment on the internet or in the real world, some people will try to exploit others' trust or lack of awareness."
