The information commissioner will begin a new investigation into the sale of personal data following several high profile information losses.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) lost two CDs containing 25 million personal records and two national newspapers have discovered further security breaches.

The Times claims it "downloaded banking information belonging to 32 people, including a High Court deputy judge and a managing director" from a website.

Additionally, the News of the World said it has two discs from the Department for Work and Pensions, containing data from 18,000 people.

Responding to the data loss by the HMRC, Richard Thomas, information commissioner, advised organisations to earn public trust by addressing security concerns.

"The alarm bells must now ring in every organisation about the risks of not protecting people’s personal information properly," he said.ADNFCR-1093-ID-18378913-ADNFCR
