The government sponsored Get Safe Online campaign will be touring the country and driving home the message of internet security this week.
Get Safe Online Week 2007 began today with warnings that users of social networks are releasing too much personal data and 7.8 million people in the UK are leaving their Wi-Fi networks unsecured.
Tony Neate, managing director of the campaign, warned: “The popularity of social networking and other sites means that we are much more open about ourselves and our lives online.”
He added: “Although some of these details may seem harmless, they actually provide rich pickings for criminals.”
At today’s Get Safe Online Summit, a specialist from the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) will demonstrate how criminals can use the internet to commit offences.
He warns: “Most internet users don’t realise the risks involved in using Wi-Fi if you use an unsecured network. Criminals can use the network you are on to hijack your PC or laptop, meaning that they can see, steal, delete or even add files on your machine.”
The average number of broadband subscribers per population across Europe has risen from 14.9 per cent to 18.2 per cent. Despite performing well, the UK is still behind the continent’s leader, Denmark, which has 37.2 per cent.
