Facebook expects more

Web 2.0

22 October 2007

Facebook, the social networking website, will make changes to its user ID allowing not billons, but quintillions more users.

The site is changing its user ID from 32 bit to 64 bit in a move that
should be complete by early November.

Dave Morin, senior platform manager, explained why the change was
necessary. Writing in his blog, he said: "In the not-so-distant future,
we will begin using 64 bit object IDs in some places. So, the numbers
will become too big to handle in some situations."

The world population is 6.5 billion and the site's current system allows
for nearly 4.3 billion accounts. This move will give Facebook the facility to host 18 quintillion user accounts.

Mark Zuckerberg, company chairman, wants to create a platform where the site's users can take their data across to other online services.

Speaking at the Web 2.0 Summit in California, he said: "It's the users' data. We want to [make it portable.] That's the goal."ADNFCR-1093-ID-18325697-ADNFCR
