Google in news agencies deal

Google is now hosting news stories from four major news agencies, allowing it to generate extra advertising revenue from Google news.

The internet giant is hosting material from the Associated Press, Agence France-Presse, the Press Association and the Canadian Press.

Google News now displays stories from these agencies on its landing pages, rather than just linking to other organisations' articles - as was previously the case.

Business product manager of Google News Josh Cohen told Reuters: "I think it is fair to say we are always looking at ways to help publishers distribute, promote and monetise their content.

"There is no doubt that this deal gives us more flexibility for the product in a number of ways.

"Nothing happens algorithmically to these partners that doesn't happen to anybody else."

Mr Cohen explained that this move could result in publishers losing traffic from their news stories, but said that this was compensated for by the fact that they would have more space for original content.
